Not enough time in the day for ideas

“Thoughts race, as if, in a mind devoid of memory, each idea has too much space to grow and move, to collide with others in a shower of sparks before spinning off into its own distance.” ― S.J. Watson

“Ideas can come from anywhere and at any time. The problem with making mental notes is that the ink fades very rapidly.” ― Rolf Smith

“Bring ideas in and entertain them royally, for one of them may be the king.”― Mark Van Doren

This morning I managed to dream up outlines for 3 novels, a pattern for a knitted tea towel and a recipe for a ‘roasted and smashed potato salad’. Then my brain pushed forward an old sticky note. I had forgotten to embark on my bonsai for dummies course where I will bonsai my first azalea. I have the azalea and the bonsai pot. I must attend to that.

Just a few more pies.

Proscrastinating and the Pomodoro technique

Reading Metamorphosing Wallflower’s  post yesterday about Living Life on the Edge of Procrastination prompted me to once again reflect on what i have achieved in the last 2 years or so.

I used to be a huge procrastinator but I found a way to get around that by putting my fingers in too many pies. I have called this solution numerous things, including DIVERSIFICATION, which is a kind way of saying that I am investing time in MANY VERY IMPORTANT THINGS.

I think I’ve developed my own version of the Pomodoro technique where you break your work into short intervals, say 30 minutes, and then take a break. In my version I have several tasks on the go at any one time and can switch between them quite happily, and hence never get bored.

I’ve chucked together images from the last 2 years since I retired from full time work. Two years of making stuff—making images, making objects, growing things, growing ideas, growing techniques. Some of the many pies can be seen here.

Smooth

Preparing food and cooking is the literal expression of my ‘too many pies’. The breakfast smoothie looked splendid this morning, so C took these photos for me.

In this smoothie:

  • frozen blueberries
  • fresh strawberries
  • bananas
  • Barambah bush honey yoghurt
  • honey
  • pomegranate juice

Buzz in a jug and voila! Drink and chew on a handful of almonds and walnuts.

My conundrum

conundrum2

My life’s conundrum put’s pressure on me to find, view, appreciate and manipulate imagery.

The imagery is already in my dna—that’s why I am drawn to it. Geometric images, exotically coloured images, rhythmic images, textures, clouds, water, drapery, spheres, contraptions.

Great images settle in my mind and in my body and compel me to make something from the image—make something with my hands or with words. Not something that mimics the image, but something that has a conversation with the image.

The conundrum is why [?].
